Hi, I'm Derek a frontend web developer. I've had a mouse and keyboard in front of me since I was in diapers. Some things never change... I'm no longer in diapers though.
When I started college I originally had the idea of going into graphic design. After building my first website with Wordpress and getting the instant gratification of praise from others, I was addicted. The web was my outlet. I found a new way to exhibit and share my passions. I am thankful everyday that I made that decision.
I build digital products because I love it. I like the industry. I like the people I get to meet. I like to talk shop. I love giving life and emotions to whatever I create.
I fell in love with web design four years ago. Since then I’ve been fascinated by the emotion that could be conveyed through a screen. I was then in turn driven to learn how the web is created from the other side of the screen. Viewing beautiful designs is pleasant right? But for me it's creating in the hope of evoking a response in others.
I first became aware of digital design while playing a game called Pitfall on a now obsolete computer named the Commodore 64 with its 8 bit graphics. Pitfall was made by Activision who now brings you some of the most widely played games in the world such as the Call of Duty franchise which is presented in breathtaking 4K resolution
The same developments that have brought us these new immersive experiences are also driving forward our creativity as web designers and developers.
These are exciting times to be a web developer with the possibilities these new viewing mediums provide, from a tiny smart watch screen to apples new super high resolution monitors. Design is no longer as limited. It's not the fact that we now have to think "Outside The Box" it's just the box has been be reimagined.
While still in its infancy, responsive design for now is a standard and I look forward with bright optimism to creating a vibrant and more accessible web.
I love to work with the UI / UX designers to bridge the gap between the graphic designs and the technical implementation, adopting an involved role on both sides to define both the look and functionality of websites and applications.
CSS Grid in combination with Flexbox are my current code romances. The possibilities to design magazine style web pages and future proof my skillset have me hooked.
